What is the first video game you ever played?
I can’t actually remember what the very first one was. But for the sake of argument, it was probably Super Mario Bros. on the NES. Because the odds are really good that it was Super Mario Bros. 🙂 The NES was just hitting its stride in the US when I got to video game-appropriate age, so I was pretty lucky to grow up with such a legendary and influential console.
What is your favorite game of all time?
After over 25 years of incredible games on so many platforms, it’s nearly impossible for me to pick a single favorite game of all time. The best I could do would be to make a short list: Doom, Super Mario Bros. 3, Rock Band, Ys Book I & II, Full Throttle… oh who am I kidding? I could go on for a while! 🙂
What do you do for fun when not playing video games?
I’m kind of a simpleton when I’m not gaming, honestly. There aren’t many things that make me happier than a nice long walk with my dog, Maggie. I also love to drive, even though I no longer have my dream car, my old 1982 DeLorean. My newest hobby is the Tesla podcast I just started for fun, Ride the Lightning. I don’t own a Tesla yet but I am a superfan/wannabe owner!
How do you balance gaming and family life?
I wouldn’t say I really balance gaming and family life — the family responsibilities always come first. As a result, I have less free time to play games than I ever have, and that in turn makes me pickier about my games. On the plus side, it means I rarely play anything but very good games! I am also very lucky that I work at IGN. So even though, contrary to what some think, I don’t sit around playing video games all day at work, I do get to work at a job where I won’t get fired if I do load up a game. 🙂
