The Best Video Game Moms

johnfaceLast year we celebrated Father’s Day by discussing the most awesome Dads in all of gaming. Well, since we are an equal opportunity parenting/video game/nerd culture website we thought we would let the ladies have the spotlight this year. It was actually more difficult than I thought it would be to find many great representations of mothers in video games, hopefully that’s something that will change in the future. So this is a look at the Moms with the most, the masterful matriarchs, the…. boy, there really aren’t as many synonyms for Mother are there? Anyway, these are the coolest mothers in all of video game land. Enjoy!

(warning: may contain some story spoilers)

Joyce Price (Life is Strange)

Being a mother can be a tough gig, and Joyce Price is the embodiment of grace under pressure. After her first husband William died in a car accident (which she blames herself for), Joyce married David Madsen, a war veteran and security guard with paranoia issues. Her daughter Chloe is constantly in trouble and hates her new stepfather. But Joyce somehow manages to keep the family together all the while waiting tables at the Two Whales Diner and serving up pancakes (or bacon and eggs) and life lessons to Chloe and her friend Max.

 Anya Stroud (Gears of War)

If you’re J.D. Fenix, not only is your father the legendary war hero Marcus Fenix, but your mother is a bit of a badass in her own right. Anya served as a communications officer during the Pendulum Wars, and when the Lambent threat emerged she picked up a Lancer and joined the front lines. That’s quite a legacy for a kid to try and live up to when your mom and dad are constantly saving the planet.

Cooking Mama

If you’re like many people, one of your favorite memories of mom from your childhood is of the food she made, the tasty home cooked meals she would work so hard to prepare for you. Now imagine having a mama that was a master in every possible type of cuisine! Italian? No problem! Mexican? You got it! Sushi? Coming right up!

 Samus Aran (Metroid)

While it may not be the most traditional mother/child relationship, a baby metroid  did look to Samus as it’s mother after imprinting on her right after hatching. Unfortunately family life was not meant to be for this galactic bounty hunter as her adopted alien baby was kidnapped by the pirate Ridley and later sacrificed itself to save it’s “mother”. It’s not all sad though, by sacrificing itself, the metroid empowered Samus with a wicked cool new ability. That’s something, right?

 Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat)

Often time on the playground, kids will argue about who’s got the toughest dad or the coolest mom. If you’re Cassie Cage  you win that fight every time. It’s pretty easy when you can say that your mom is a U.S. Special Forces soldier who battles international crime syndicates as well as former gods from the Netherealm. Plus she will quite literally rip off your head and wear it on her belt as a trophy. So….. there’s that.

Jenova (Final Fantasy VII)

Jenova wants what all mothers want, for her extraterrestrial genes to be used to create a race of super soldiers (including Sephiroth) and then… ah who are we kidding, we don’t know what the hell was going on in Final Fantasy VII. And come to think of it, Jenova sounds like a pretty lousy mom anyway!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the amazing moms out there! We hope you have an amazing day and spend it with those you love.
