As a figure head here at Mega Dads a lot of what I do is commentary and opinion pieces on events in the geek culture scene. As with anything on the Internet people will disagree with me and there may be blowback and crying foul on my opinions. That’s all part of the game, but one thing I’ve consistently noticed over this last year is a resistance by people to hear me out or change their views on anything at all if it means they were wrong, misinformed or even just had a change of heart. As someone who spends a lot of time engaging the online community this can be frustrating and downright dumbfounding. Perhaps it’s being highlighted particularly well because of our current political climate but it seems like people are more inclined to tell you you’re wrong or nuts than to just hear what you have to say. It’s like we’re scared to change our perspectives, and it’s kinda terrifying.
One thing I’ve always tried to do as a person is have respect for people who are different from me. I understand that I am a small cog in a big machine and as a middle-aged atheist liberal who loves Hall and Oates, and draws cartoons, I know that there aren’t a lot of people on my wave length, but I’ve never seen that as a problem. Until recently it seemed like we were ok to be different as long as the world kept turning. But now there’s such a culture of ‘if you’re not like me then you’re wrong or stupid’ and it really sucks.
It just kind of came to me last night as I was reading about Mario + Rabbids. I was reading all the love people had for the idea and In my head I was thinking how absolutely stupid this game seemed. What was wrong with me that I was the only one feeling this way? But then I kind of came to appreciate that, like many things, I have a unique perspective and that’s ok. It doesn’t mean that I’m wrong and it certainly doesn’t mean everyone else is crazy. We just disagree. I would like to tell you that it’s ok to be weird and out of the norm, we’re all better for being ourselves and it’s only when we start to conform that shit starts to get boring here on Earth.
So it’s in the spirit of this that I open myself up to you and let you know the following opinions…
I love the movie Snakes on a Plane, I think Prince was a terrible songwriter, Mario Sunshine is infinitely better than Galaxy, The Flash on CW is an AMAZING program, climate change is real (that one is actually not debatable), and Rabbids have never been in a good game.
Am I right about all of that stuff? No (except for climate change. Because Science), they are opinions and feelings I have that are different from everyone else in the world. It’s what makes me who I am. I hope you will read this, disagree with some of it, and be ok with that. This is a lesson I will teach my kids when they get older. We are different and that’s a good thing. Even though today’s current climate seems to punish people for being different, I will always be on the side of the snowflakes. It makes life much more interesting.
