The first major Pokemon game to appear on the Nintendo Switch, this entry is a simplified take on the series which still manages to appeal to both young fans and older players who have been catching Pokemon for years. It features both local and online play so everyone can play together and it also connects with the wildly popular mobile game Pokemon Go. If you or your kids have spent your time hunting Hypno or chasing Charmander, this game is guaranteed to be a big hit.

There’s a lot to love about Overcooked! 2. First there’s the fact that you can play with up to 4 players on a single screen (or online) which makes for some fun family game nights. It’s also pretty easy to pick up on with a simple control layout and graphical icons to help players know what they’re supposed to be doing next. Beware though, the difficulty can ramp up pretty quickly and things can get pretty intense if your sous chefs aren’t pulling their weight in the kitchen. It’s definitely one of the most fun couch co-op games available and kids and parents both will have a blast.

For the older kids in the family, you simply won’t go wrong with Spider-Man. Swinging around New York City is just about the most fun thing you’ll ever do in a video game, and the controls are simple enough that you can even pass the controllers to the youngsters to swing around the rooftops. We only recommend this for older kids though as there’s plenty of gun play and the story can get pretty intense at times. If they’re mature enough though it’s one of the best games of 2018 (and one that you’ll definitely want to play too).

The Toys to Life genre (Skylanders, Disney Infinity) may not be as popular as it used to be, but Starlink is evolving things smartly by making the additional toys completely optional. With or without them, you’ll be customizing your ships and blasting your way around the universe. A unique cast of characters and interesting story will keep you busy throughout the campaign, and as a special bonus Nintendo Switch owners get some cool, additional Star Fox themed content!

The great thing about Nintendo Labo is that you’re giving your kids a video game and an art project at the same time. Players assemble various cardboard contraptions that you then insert your Nintendo Switch into to create everything from a fishing pole to a piano. The games themselves are a tad on the simple side and won’t hold their interest as long as other games, but the fun you’ll have building is what makes this imaginative series so special.

Gift Giving Pro Tips

  • If you’re giving a gaming console this holiday it might be a good idea to hook it up and get all of the system updates out of the way before wrapping it. The same goes for the games themselves. Most modern games need to be installed first and depending on your internet that could take a couple of hours! If your kids are going to want to play right away, you best get ahead of the game and start installing early.
  • If you’re looking for a gift for a gamer but don’t know (or can’t decide) exactly what to get them, don’t guess… gift card! Not all games are created equal and it’s a bummer when they get something they don’t want. Also, there are a lot of amazing games that are digital only so they’ll have plenty to choose from when they spend their digital bucks.
  • Video games aren’t the only things that will make the gamers in your house happy this year. Stores like Target and GameStop have stocked up on gifts and collectables that will put a smile on any gamers face. Everything from puzzles, books, Amiibo, and action figures. There are loads of options out there for awesome stocking stuffers.
