Gamer Spotlight: Trisha Hershberger

Trisha Hershberger  (Tech & Gaming Producer, Host)

Growing up on the east coast, Trisha got her BA in Theater Arts and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. She started working with the popular YouTube channel, Sourcefed, and helped to launch their spinoff channel SourcefedNerd where she earned two Streamy Awards for her work. She now runs her own production company where she creates content for companies like Geek & Sundry, Newegg & Comic Con HQ and has appeared on programs from IGN, Nerdist & DC All Access. On top of all of that, she somehow finds time to do the occasional consulting & social media marketing work, as well as get married and start a family!

What is the first video game that you remember playing?

“The first video game I remember playing was ‘Zork’ on the Commodore 64. I was very young and my dad had gotten the console second hand from a colleague at work. My father had no interest in games but got it for me so I would stop asking for the NES haha. Spoiler Alert: his plan didn’t work.”

img_2307What are your favorite games of all time?

“For purely nostalgia reasons, my favorite games of all time include Myst – I beat it in 48hrs with no walkthrough when many friends had told me it was impossible – and Paperboy for the NES – I spent so much time speedrunning this game as a 6 year old that, to this day, I have yet to meet anyone who can Paperboy on my level. Outside of those two titles, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X, and The Sims hold places of high honor in my personal gaming history.”

Which hobbies or pastimes do you enjoy besides gaming?

“Outside of video games, I love playing Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering and having friends over for game night – although I guess that technically is still gaming. Outside of gaming as a whole, I enjoy comics, movies and anything high-fantasy. I cosplay when I can afford the time to do so and I’m really into gadgets – taking them apart and putting them back together. I started modding and building PCs at a young age mostly to feed my gaming habit and got hooked.”

Do you and your children play video games together?

“My little guy is two years old now and I have yet to find a game that grabs his attention. I used to jokingly put him in the front-load baby carrier and play ARMS or Just Dance or Kung Fu Kinect which was hilarious to watch but more for my entertainment than his. I cannot wait for the day he can play games with mommy!”

How do you make time for gaming with a busy family life and career?

“Luckily for me, games are a part of my career. I stream on Twitch, create videos for YouTube and host gaming shows for a variety of outlets, so my game time is usually tied in with a job in some way or another. Balancing gaming/work with family life is tough. I used to be a person who worked 24/7 because I love what I do and I simply cannot do that anymore. Now there is a tiny human who depends on me and needs me to be around, so it’s forced me to do things differently. I still haven’t figured out the perfect balance. I run my own studio, so when I feel like I’m working too much, I pull back and that’s the only way I’ve been able to make it work so far.”

What is your proudest moment as a parent?

“My proudest moment as a parent? My guy is still really young so it’s hard to say, but in general, he’s already a very sweet and empathetic guy who is great at sharing, which I hear is rare for his age. I’d like to think I had something to do with that, but who knows? He also loves to belt out musical theatre tunes and that makes me so happy!!”
