Nintendo Mega Bits: February 2021

It’s another month and still more silence from Nintendo.  Wait!!  No, it’s not.  Nintendo Has finally given me stuff to talk about.  I can finally talk about a game I have played and new ones that I will be spending my money on.  This month is an exciting one, so let’s dive in.

The original highlight of the month was the release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury.  I’m not going to go into too many details here because you can hear my full thoughts in my Report Card on it.  What I will say is that Super Mario 3D World is one of the best Mario games in the last 10 years.  Bowser’s Fury was a fun addition that gives you a good bit of variety.

I think this is a game everyone needs to grab.  There are many hours of gameplay in it to make it well worth the cost.  As a parent, these games are about perfect.  They are fun for all skill levels, are multiplayer, and star the greatest video game character of all time.  Check out the report card and pick the game up.

The biggest news of the week is that Nintendo decided to have its first full size Direct in a year and a half.  I set my expectations very low going in and took a lot of grief for doing so.  Nintendo said they were going to talk about Smash Bros., Games that are already out, and games coming out the first half of the year.  None of that gave me any confidence that the Direct was going to be worthwhile.

In the end, I was pleasantly surprised.  They showed something for just about everyone.  I am not saying the Direct was great, but it had some games that have me excited.  I really think they could have cut a bit out and made it more of a tight presentation, but I’ll take what I can get.  I don’t want to talk about every single announcement, but let’s get into what was shown.

The event kicked off with the introduction of a new fighter to Smash Bros.  They told us it was coming but they still tried to trick us with how they showed it.  The new fighter, or fighters, is Pyra and Mythra, from the Xenoblade series.  It seems like you can flip back and forth between them at any time, and they have slightly different attacks.

I have played very little of any Xenoblade game.  I know nothing about Pyra and Mythra.  I don’t play   Smash Bros. anymore.  It seems like they are just adding another sword character to a lineup that is jam packed with sword characters.  I’m sure someone out there is excited about this announcement but it’s definitely not me.

Next up is another game that is only for a specific audience, but I think it’s a great addition to the Switch.  Fall Guys is coming this summer!!  If you are not one of the PlayStation or Steam players that have had the pleasure of playing this, you are in for a treat.  It is a race style Battle Royale with cute characters and fun costumes.  I don’t know if I will buy it because I have it on PS4.

We have known for a while that Monster Hunter Rise is coming out soon.  What we didn’t know is that there will be a Monster Hunter Switch and it look beautiful.  The Joycons have designs on the front and back.  The dock has a design on it as well.  I don’t really care about the game, but the console is appealing.  There will also be a special edition Pro Controller that looks just as beautiful.

Possibly my favorite announcement was Mario Golf Super Rush, coming out June 25th.  I, along with many others, have been dying for the next installment in the Mario Golf line.  These games are not as much of a simulation as some, but they are great.  I’m always amazed at how sporty that fat little plumber is.

I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when I saw that motion controls have been thrown into the game.  You don’t have to use them, and I probably only will once or twice.  I know the motion controls on the Switch are much better than on the Wii, but I still prefer using the normal controls.

One of the coolest things is they have added a Speed Run mode.  Everyone runs as fast as they can to sink their ball first.  To add to the chaos, power-ups are in this mode.  I have no idea how effective they will be, but I am looking forward to throwing a fireball at another golfer.  They also have a story mode that I am sure I’ll sink a lot of time into.

Capcom Classics is a set of arcade games and is available now.  1943 comes with the initial download and is free.  From there, you must buy packs of games.  I played 1943 and it plays well.  I think this is a great idea for those that enjoy older arcade games.

DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power, coming out June 4th, is proof that this Direct had games for everyone.  After a little research, I found that this is based on a TV show.  I assume the target audience is young females.  Besides fighting crime, you can go shopping and post pictures on social media.  The game looks terrible, but they definitely don’t care what I think of it.

A little bit back, Nintendo let us know that Mario themed furniture is coming to Animal Crossing.  This has me very excited because the Nintendo collectibles were my favorite parts of older Animal Crossing games.  During the direct, we saw what these Mario items would be.  To my surprise, it didn’t show furniture.  Instead, it was clothing and items to be placed around the island.

Bricks, question blocks, and coins will be able to be bought and used to decorate the island.  They also showed the flag that Mario is always desperate to climb.  In the announcement, you can see people dressed as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and even Wario.  I really hope Waluigi and Toad costumes are available.

The coolest item they showed off was the warp pipe.  When you have two of these on your island, you can travel between them.  This will help get from one side to the other, but, more than that, I just think it’s cool.  I will be spending a lot of time putting all these items around my island when they come out on March 1st

Square Enix has another game coming with a really bad name.  Project Triangle Strategy will be here in 2022.  It has the same art style as Octopath Traveler, accept this is a tactical RPG.  The demo for the game is out now.  I was optimistic about liking it but let down.  I played the demo for quite a while and it was all dialogue.  Bad move.

Lucasfilm Games has made a Star Wars game that I’m a bit skeptical about.  Star Wars Hunters will be a free-to-play arena fighter.  The trailer didn’t show any actual game footage so this could be complete garbage.  Because it will be free, I’ll give it a try.  The weird thing is that the official Star Wars website stated the game will be on the Switch, the App Store, and Google Play.  This feels strange, even though the Switch seems to be the place to port mobile games to.

Knockout City looks fun, but I worry its player base will be short lived.  I’m not exactly sure what the game is.  It looks like an online, 4 on 4, sports game.  The trailer makes it look fast pace and crazy.  If this is a free-to-play game, I’m in.  Otherwise, I’ll wait and see.

It looks like we won’t be hearing more info about Breath of the Wild 2 until later in the year.  In the meantime, we will all be able to enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.  When I say that “we will all be able to enjoy” it, I mean it.  There have been many groans from the masses that this is the Zelda game getting ported to the Switch and this needs to stop.

I am not here to say that Skyward Sword is the best Zelda game.  Honestly, it’s one of the least great Zelda games.  As it turns out, being one of the least best Zelda games does not mean it’s a bad game.  Skyward Sword is a really fun game.  It tells the story of how it all began.  It has fun dungeons.  You need to play this game.

Skyward Sword’s controls were all about the motion controls.  The nunchuck controlled the movement and the shield.  The Wiimote Plus controlled the sword.  You would have to swing the controller in the direction that Link needed to swing his sword.  This made the final battle difficult but very rewarding.  On the Switch, the joycons will be used for the motion controls.  I hope they will be a little more accurate.  If you don’t want to play this way, the right stick will control the sword.  I’m hopeful about the controls.

A set of limited edition Joycons are being released alongside the game.  They are beautiful and I want them.  What worries me is playing $80 for a set of Joycons that will inevitably be drifting in six months.  On the flip side, all my Joycons have some issues so they will be difficult to use when playing with motion controls.  I think the decision would be easier if there was a good way to display them later on.

In a surprising announcement, Nintendo told us that Splatoon 3 will be coming out next year.  I have started playing Splatoon 2 a lot more lately, so I am happy to hear that they are keeping the franchise going.  The announcement for it was a little strange.  It showed a squid kid on a train for way too long.  All the same, I’m sure the game will be great.

Other games are being brought to the Switch throughout the year.  PVZ Battle for Neighborville on March 19th, Apex Legends on March 9th, Tales from the Borderlands on March 24th, and The Outer Wilds in the Summertime.  Other games were mentioned throughout the Direct, so it’s worth going back and seeing it all.

In a recent interview, the President of Nintendo stated that the Switch is in the middle of its life cycle.  This is good and bad news.  I love the Switch and don’t want to have to buy a new one.  On the other hand, I’d love a Nintendo console with more power.  I’m not sure if this means they won’t make advanced versions of the current console, or if it just means they won’t be making another new console for 4 or more years.  I guess only time will tell.

Well, for the first time in months, Nintendo has actually given me something to talk about.  I hope that something they announced has you excited for the months to come.  I still believe there are some bigger games that Nintendo is waiting to announce.  All the same, it was a good month.

Until next month, I’m Jonny Casino and this had been the Mega Dads Nintendo MegaBits for February 2021.
