After a big month in February, March has been less exciting. Rumors have been the highlight. Rumors are fun but we never know if they actually mean anything. I know it’s selfish, but I want to know more about what’s coming up. I wish I knew how long I needed to wait to find out more.
This month has been full of rumors for Nintendo. Most of these rumors have come from “verified insiders”, whatever that means. All the rumors are just that, and we need to keep our expectations in check. I will also say that I am getting more and more excited and will be crushed when if these don’t turn out to be true.
The first, and least exciting in my opinion, is a rumor that Metroid Prime 4 will be released on January 2nd, 2023. Apparently, Amazon leaked this date to a customer who had pre-ordered the game a while back. This could be complete crap. This could have just been a placeholder. Honestly, this isn’t the game I’m looking forward to as much, so I’m happy to wait.
Let’s refresh what we do know about the game. Metroid Prime 4 was first announced at E3 2017. We got a logo and that’s about what we’ve seen of it. I’m sure it will be similar to the first three games in the series. In January 2019, Nintendo announced that they had scrapped the development of the game and are starting over. This time, Retro, the team behind the first three, will be doing the work. Granted, I’m sure most of that team has changed over the years. Yep, that’s all we know.
A game I would be more excited for is Mario Kart 9. A new rumor has emerged that states the game is in development and will be out this year. Over the last year, Nintendo has shown that they are more than happy to announce a game only months before it releases. I love Mario Kart and would love for this rumor to be true.
The most exciting rumor is about the Switch Pro. Nintendo has said that they are not working on the next system, but this doesn’t mean they won’t have a mid-cycle upgrade. If PlayStation and Xbox did it, why not Nintendo? The rumors have come from a few different sources and the information is not quite in line.
One source claims that the new version will be more powerful than the PS4 and Xbox One, but not as powerful as the PS5 and the Series X/S. This is a big jump for the Switch. The system should output at 4K when docked. The source further makes claims that the new version will come with a new gimmick of some sort. I hope that last part isn’t true. This rumor claims a 2022 release, possibly along with Breath of the Wild 2.
The competing rumor about the Switch Pro has me even more excited. According to these “insiders”, Samsung will start mass production of a 7-inch OLED screen in June. This will be a 720P screen, but the new version will output 4K when docked. According to this source, the Pro version should be ready for the holiday season, this year. I might actually cry if we get a Switch Pro announcement in the next 6 months.
If you read or listened to my review of Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, you know how much I enjoyed that game. Since rolling credits, I have continued to put hours into the game. I obtained every Cat Shine in Bowser’s Fury, and I knew that was coming. What I didn’t expect was how much more there would be to 3D World.
After rolling credits on the main game, three more worlds were unlocked. These worlds are more difficult than anything before and I had to fight just to complete them. The biggest kicker is that I had to get every star, every stamp, and the top of the flagpole on every level to unlock the final world. I am still working on this and it has been such a fun challenge.
I’ve done a few controller reviews recently. Power A controllers for the Switch have always received my approval. Now, they are releasing the FUSION Pro wireless controller for the Switch. It comes in at the steep price of $100. That puts it a bit out of the range I want to spend, but it has features that might make it worth it.
The controller can be used wired or wireless. It also has a headphone jack on it. I assume it’ll have to be wired to be able to use the headphone jack, but maybe not. The controller is also somewhat customizable. You can change the faceplate, change out thumbsticks, and even add back paddles. That’s right, you can attach mappable back paddles.
Beyond that, this controller will have rubberized textured grips and full motion controls. This looks like it’s the Nintendo version of the Xbox Elite controller. The one thing I am pretty sure it will lack is vibrations. Previous models have not had it and the website doesn’t mention it. If I can convince myself to pay up for this, you’ll get a review.
Niantic and Nintendo are making another mobile app. Just like Pokemon GO, this one will encourage people to get out and walk. This time, Pikmin is the focus of the app. They haven’t put much information out yet. They said that it’ll be an augmented reality game and should be out this year. Pokemon GO didn’t really do it for me, but I’m excited about trying this new one out.
Mario items came to Animal Crossing at the beginning of the month. To be honest, I’m a little disappointed now. I like them, and I have them in one area of the island, but I’m not creative enough to make it good. I would much rather them give us collectibles. I want items from different Nintendo franchises to place around my island and house.
Super Nintendo World is finally open in Japan. CNN sent a reporter out to take a look and the video is amazing. The entrance is through a warp pipe, and I can’t think of a better way to start my day. The park is taking many precautions due to covid. Masks are required, but there are areas where you can take them off. These look to primarily be in photo areas, but you are still required to keep some distance from the characters.
The report only showed off a few attractions. You can get a powerband that allows you to punch question block and I assume other Mario objects. These earn you points and allow you to compete with others in the park. There is a Yoshi ride. Just like Yoshi, this one looks to be for younger kids. The best ride they showed was a Mario Kart one. It uses augmented reality and looks perfect.
Sadly, I won’t be seeing this park anytime soon. Japan is not allowing international travel, and my family doesn’t have a desire to go to Japan anyway. I’ve been to Japan a few times. I’d love to go back, but I’ll just have to wait.
Last month was a busy one so the new games added to the Nintendo Online Service had to wait. When the games were announced, I doubt anyone was excited. These four titles are not well known, which makes me believe not many people are trying them out. Don’t worry, I’ve tried these games and ready to talk about them now.
Doomsday Warrior is a fighting game released in 1992 on the SNES. With games like Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat, this game never had a chance to shine. It also didn’t help that the game is not good. I’m not a big fighting game fan, but I normally have some fun playing them. This time I found nothing I enjoyed. If you haven’t played this yet, don’t bother.
Prehistorik Man is a platforming game released in 1995 on the SNES. The game feels like a clone of Joe & Mac, which is a game I enjoy. It’s tough for me to say how good the game is because my judgment is clouded. I don’t feel it is better than Joe & Mac, but it is still a fun game. The platforming works, and the world is full of prehistoric creatures. This title is one worth playing from time to time.
Psycho Dream is an action game released in 1992 on the Super Famicom. The game was never localized or brought to the U.S. Maybe this game was fun when it first came out, but I did not enjoy it at all. You can move left and right, jump, and attack side to side. The enemies felt generic. Some flew at me from above, but they don’t give you the ability to attack upward. This is another game you can feel free to pass on.
Fire’n Ice is a puzzle game released in 1993 on the NES. This is the hidden gem that Nintendo has laid upon us. The game is a prequel to Solomon’s key. You play as a girl with a wand that makes and destroys ice blocks. The goal of each level is to put out the flames by sliding or dropping ice blocks on them. The puzzles are well made, and a game like this is able to pass the test of time. I highly recommend everyone try this one.
So, that is the month. We have an over-the-top new controller and an AR game to look forward to. We might have an upgraded Switch this year. All of this is exciting but still leaves me wanting. What big games are still on the horizon? What will we be playing? When are Breath of the Wild 2 and the next new Mario games coming out? It’s killing me and I need to know!!
