Game of the Month (April 2025) - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Between the PC release of The Last of Us Part 2 (April 3), to the PS5 release of Forza 5 (April 29), April is going to be a month to look forward to for gamers. For fighting-game fans, Fatal Fury is releasing City of the Wolves (April 24), which is their first release in the series in 26 years since Garou: Mark of the Wolves. As a fan of JRPGs, I’m looking forward to the remastered collection of the Lunar games (April 18th). There’s a little something for everyone coming out this month, but there is one game that looks like it could either be a masterpiece or a flop. I predict it to be a masterpiece, so this month MegaDad’s April 2025 game of the month is going to be Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG published by Kepler Interactive and developed by Sandfall Interactive. It’s a dark fantasy setting inspired by the Belle Epoque France, and though it brands itself as a turn-based RPG, there are real-time mechanics to the battles. In the land of Lumière, a god-like being called the Paintress has culled the land by painting a number on her monolith each year that causes everyone that age to die. Expedition 33 is made up of a party of people trying to learn more about the Paintress, destroy her and change their fate.
So why should you feel excited to play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33? The media available about this game is breathtaking, and the setting is unique and mystifying. The cast of voice actors is top notch: including Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), and Andy Serkis (pretty much everything CGI these days). The publisher made a few games that I enjoyed very much, including Cat Quest and Tchia, and from all I’ve seen about this game, it looks like it will easily be part of that list too. The creative director’s influences came from Persona and Final Fantasy games, which are high on my list of favorites. I am more than hyped to dive into this intriguing setting and save the world from the Paintress, and when it releases at the end of the month, you should be feeling the same.
