Tokyo Game Show Dominated

As someone who was openly disappointed by this year’s Summer Games Fest and also by Gamescom, I found myself extremely excited for this year’s Tokyo Game show. Leading up to the event there certainly seemed to be a groundswell of buzz and hype around the annual games event in Japan. People were talking, rumors were buzzing and best of all it was a concentrated event that put all its cards on the table across a nicely contained period of time. No Summer Games Fest watering down over weeks and even months here. TGS was happening over the weekend, and I LOVE the return to this approach.

Not only was I happy about this style of news-cycle, but the games themselves and the news surrounding them were truly awesome. In my opinion this year’s Tokyo Game Show dominated the year in regard to gaming events. Let me break down some of the things I was most excited about.

Suikoden 1 & 2 Remaster

While Konami did not deliver the goods on a Silent Hill revival just yet, they blew me away with a gorgeous remaster of some of the most heralded RPGs of the PlayStation 1 era. Suikoden 1 & 2 Remaster is bringing the epic fantasy series into the modern age with a gorgeous visual upgrade that both polishes up the original while retaining the ‘retro’ charm of the classic game’s design. This is also a great opportunity for me to play Suikoden 2, which is a rare game to acquire and one that I have never played. I am beyond excited for this collection.

N64 Games for Switch Online

Some folks may think I’m joking when I saw a collection of N64 games is one of my most exciting reveals at TGS but I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am for what is coming to Switch Online + Expansion Pack. While everyone is obviously (and rightfully so) excited for the long-awaited return of Goldeneye 007, I just about lost my marbles when Pilotwings 64 graced my screen. Pilotwings 64 is one of my favorite N64 video games of all time and I am going to get lost in this game when it drops. The inclusions of Excitedbike and 1080 have made this expansion worth the price of admission for Switch Online alone. I can’t believe I’m saying this but Nintendo is nailing it with this online service.

Crisis Core Reunion

With a release date of December 13th revealed as well as hands-on with the game providing a much better look at how Square Enix has brought this game into the modern age, Crisis Core has taken a spot as one of my most anticipated holiday games. This is another example of a remake/remaster providing me an opportunity to play a game that I never have before. I cannot wait to experience this chapter of the Final Fantasy VII saga for the first time and I’m loving how closely it looks to stick to the look and feel of VII Remake.

All said and done with these three reveals alongside many other reveals and hands-on impressions of tons of fantastic games I am very happy to see the Tokyo Game Show come out swinging so hard and dominating the years video game events. Congratulations to everyone involved, and also to all the players who have so much to look forward to playing!
